I’ve always wanted to do a project in my parent’s house and when I found out they were downsizing and moving into a smaller house this was the perfect opportunity to help decorate! I wanted to create a dining room meant for generations to gather round during the holidays no matter the size with a warm rustic feel.

Vintage Inspired Dining Room Makeover – Before

The project actually worked out in their favor! My mom is a flight attendant and works a lot during the holidays. However, this year she got Thanksgiving off – but here’s the downside. When they were packing up their furniture to move, my mom and dad took the leaf out of their dining table and the table just split in 2! So they had nowhere to sit and eat a meal together besides the small eat in kitchen with 2 seats.

Their new home was built in the 40’s and has so many beautiful arches and curved ceiling. I can’t wait to marry my moms vintage pieces with the farmhouse pieces she loves to create Vintage Farmhouse Dining Room she’ll love.

My mom knew I’d be redecorating her dining room but she had no idea I’d be doing it before Thanksgiving.

Vintage Inspired Dining Room Makeover Reveal

I really wanted her to be able to have place to celebrate Thanksgiving, so I flew out for a weekend to California secretly to create this beautiful dining room for her!

She came home from a long work week to a brand new dining room and her favorite part was this show stopper, Home Decorators Collection Cane Bark Rectangular Dining Table. This table is a BEAST! It’s 100% solid mango wood and varies a bit in color, but it fits in here so well. I know this table will last for generations to come because of the durability and weight.

I mean, peep those table legs, isn’t she a beaut! This table actually comes with a matching bench, but we ultimately decided on these StyleWell StyleWell Black Wood Dining Chair with Ladder Back that come in a set of 2. Home Depot’s StyleWell line has so many reasonably priced dining chairs, y’all! So if you’re a few short for the holidays these are great because a lot of them come in a set of 2!

The StyleWell chairs come in 5 different colors too, which makes these ones so versatile too!

When they bought this house there was literally no light in this dining room! I know, it sounds bizarre, but they had no dining table so it really wasn’t a huge deal for my parents initially.

So I scooped up this LNC Aley 6-Light Rustic Bronze Chandelier in Classic Farmhouse Candle Style! It’s on the smaller side which was great for their dining room since it has low ceilings and wasn’t the biggest dining room. The chandelier is definitely BRONZE, but it looks so much darker in person which was great! It paired really well with the black furniture we added in here.

Initially the olive green hutch with desk was going to stay, but she decided to “Let it Go” in words of Frozen and my 3 year old daughter to a good home – my aunts house. So she’ll she it a least once a year for the holidays.

I went with the Home Decorators Collection Harwick Black Buffet and it made the space what feels like 10x bigger. Is that even possible? Apparently so and my dad was pretty please to see that I made the dining room bigger by ADDING furniture. The power of home decor, am I right?!

We can’t forget about how much storage it holds for additional dishes when not in use! The easiest way to store holiday table decor is in a buffet. A buffet is also great for – you guessed it – buffet style eating! Set up the instant pot and some of your favorite dishes for the family to serve themselves or create individual plats for family to grab.

Isn’t that Nearly Natural 2.41 ft. Topiary with Decorative Planter insanely real looking?! Home Depot carries some of my favorite realistic looking trees and this little topiary is one of my favorites. My mom loves lemon trees so I knew she’d be a huge fan of this one!

Styling a Dining Table for the Holidays

Styling a dining table is probably the hardest thing to do because of ALL the possibilities. The more options there are the harder it is to narrow down the design you like, so here are 2 of my favorite ways to style a dining table.

Casual Dining

Having a casual dining experience, I like to use a table cloth folded with all of the items needed for setting the table formally. This makes for a more casual setting and a sit wherever you’d like! I found this beautiful DII Chambray 60 in. x 104 in. Gray with White French Stripe Cotton Tablecloth that I seriously almost shoved in my suitcase on the way to the airport.

By folding the tablecloth at the center of the table you’re creating a larger center piece to ground the other items that wouldn’t make quite the same statement on their own,

Formal Dining

Let’s get our Thanksgiving on y’all! Formal dining is my favorite, at one point in life I thought I wanted to be a wedding planner just so I could design table settings and place cards for a living.

There once were the days where we all used to register for fine china, but I think having beautiful stoneware is going to be the new thing these days. The STONE LAIN 16-Piece Casual Snow White Stoneware Dinnerware Set can be dressed up or dressed down with the clean lines but attention to detail with the speckled and unique pieces. They come in a set of 4 and also come with cereal bowls and coffee mugs – you can see those inside the Home Decorators Collection Harwick Buffet.

Napkins on a formal table setting can be endless from napkin rings to crazy origami folding techniques. My favorite way to style napkins are placing them between the salad plate and dinner plate for easy access and freeing up the salad plate for anything additional for the table setting! These Manor Luxe 0.1 in. H x 20 in. W x 20 in. D Classic Linen Napkins in Charcoal were organic and beautifully matched the table cloth. The Manor Luxe napkins come in a set of 4 and also in an off-white!

This was probably my favorite project I’ve done so far, getting the opportunity to create a space for generations to come in my parents new home was everything! My parents have fueled my dreams of DIY and design and I’m so happy they have a dining room now for the holidays all from homedepot.com/decor !

So many of our pieces from this dining room transformation are also on sale for Black Friday! I’ve also linked some of my favorite finds from dining to home decor for the early black friday sales.
