If you haven’t guessed it already, my big project this month will be participating in the One Room Challenge hosted by Better Homes & Gardens as a guest participant to transform our laundry room.

What is the One Room Challenge?

If you aren’t familiar with the One Room Challenge it’s put on twice a year (once in the Spring and once in the Fall). There are 20 amazing bloggers/designers that are hand picked as featured designers and then there are also guest participants, me! I’m one of 243 guest participants attempting to design a room start to finish in ONLY 6 weeks! Holy cow, our shortest remodel was 8 months long so it’ll be interesting to see how well this goes.

Every participant chooses a single room and we will all be sharing weekly updates every Thursday! Be sure to subscribe so you can follow along every week.

Our laundry room is one of the most neglected rooms in our entire home. We have been remodeling our home since we’ve moved in, in 2016. We just finished our  Carolina Room and Master Bathroom Remodel last December at THE SAME TIME. So I have confidence we…I mean I can do this. Did I forget to mention hubs will be leaving in a few weeks meaning I’ll be in the final stretch on my own?!

Laundry Room Remodel Drama

Now who wants to hear the soap opera that’s happened with our Laundry room? So, we actually attempted to start on the laundry room and we were basically left in a lurch by a contractor. Yes, that really happens and no we hadn’t paid him yet. He was a painter and he painted our cabinets the same time we had our kitchen cabinets painted.

We asked him to come back last fall and smooth out the ceiling in the laundry room like he had done in our kitchen the year prior. He scraped the ceiling and removed the old light fixture and said he’d need to come back another day and should be done. Well, that was August 2018 and now we’re here in April and his phone is now disconnected. So we think something not so great happened to him since he didn’t bother to finish the job and get paid.

Since August we have also had no electricity in the laundry room so I’ve spent many nights doing laundry in the dark. I’ve had plenty of pink clothes thanks to Liv’s little colorful socks hiding in the washing machine. So we decided to do the laundry room for the one room challenge out of sheer need for a better functioning laundry room. Can I get an Amen?!

BEFORE

When we moved in the laundry room was so sad. I also couldn’t figure out if it was also a make shift office because of the filing cabinet.

DURING

This is currently what we’re dealing with and how it always looks. It’s never clean because we have a never ending list of laundry to do and there’s just way too many things in this tiny 41 Square Foot room.

The laundry room spills out into the breakfast nook because there just isn’t enough room with this little laundry to house everything we need it to.

If you’ve stuck around long enough to see all my undergarments I forgot to remove, then you’re in for a treat! Now let’s talk about the big plans we’ve got for this tiny laundry room.

Laundry Room Plans

The washer and dryer will stay in the same place and we’ll add a butcher block countertop. A sink was on the wish list, but space is so limited we decided to just go without.

We are going to remove the door and replace it with a sliding barn door. The door swings in and takes up so much valuable space in the laundry room. We can’t reverse the door swing either because it would hit the breakfast nook table. Sliding barn doors are great especially if you need space saving alternatives!

When I was in Palm Springs for Alt Summit I fell in love with the doors at the ACE Hotel. I have not been able to get these out of my head! I’m hoping to use them as inspiration for our laundry room barn door DIY.

I wanted to keep the same type of tile throughout all the wet areas in our home. We used a hexagon tile in both bathrooms and thought it would tie in great with the laundry room. We are going all white for a clean and minimalist look because the laundry room already gets sooooo messy.

Of course we are planning to add natural elements with plants and a beautiful Turkish rug!

I loved the vibe of this laundry room from Homes to Love it’s clean and simple and so impactful for a small space.

As you can see in Studio McGee’s laundry this screams clean and minimalistic, which is exactly what we’re going for.

I can’t wait to bring you along on this crazy remodel we’re going to finish in 6 weeks!
