POWDER BATHROOM MAKEOVER

This bathroom was stuck in the 90’s with its ornate dark vanity and brass everything. One thing this powder bathroom really lacked was a bright and clean design. The bathroom didn’t have a window, so natural light to brighten up the room wasn’t an option.

We decided to remodel the powder bathroom because Lowes was having a great President’s Day Sale on bathroom essentials, SCORE!

It’s a little hard to tell there were stipple ceilings in here. If you know what popcorn ceilings are, stipple ceilings are worse. My husband scrapped the ceilings of all the plaster to get a smooth finish (I’ll blog on a “How To Remove Stipple Ceiling’s” another time). On top of stipple ceilings, we had this yellow trim throughout the whole entire house. That means – base boards, crown molding, door frames, and doors. Being a stickler for clean design, the yellow trim had to go.

We shut the water off and removed the fixtures including the old vanity to prime the walls for new paint. We painted one coat of primer and two coats of Sherwin Williams Accessible Beige. The trim also got two coats of Sherwin Williams Snowbound, no more yellow! YAY!

For starters, my husband is not a plumber. So, hooking up the new vanity was going to be an issue. Until, he got the bright idea to YouTube, “How To Install A Vanity.” Thank the Lord for YouTube people. We went into this project blind and my husband came out an amateur plumber and electrician.

Our house had outdated hardware everywhere, can you say I love shiny brass? Instead of spending the money to purchase all new hardware, I spray painted them flat black to match the door levers we bought. Door brackets and toilet roll holders start to add up after a while so it was an easy DIY fix.

**DIY TIP: Use a piece of scrap wood and drill all your screws into it to easily spray paint. Always spray paint two coats and let the pieces dry completely between coats.

I like brass, but not in the sense that everything should be “matchy-matchy.” Nowadays you can mix and match any metals you want. The rules have been thrown out the window!

I used 2FT floating shelves from World Market. The space couldn’t fit the larger option of 3FT and the 2FT shelves fit nicely over the toilet. When hanging the shelves, I screwed the brackets into the wall with the longer side. A plus to these brackets from Lowes, they already come with drywall anchors and screws!

Follow the measurement diagram below to hang shelves above the toilet. Don’t forget to account for how wide your shelves are!

These shelves were an awesome functional solution to having very little storage space. Plus, who doesn’t love functional decor?

We ended up getting our vanity for close to 50% off sticker price. That’s Carrera marble folks! My advice, purchase expensive supplies from the hardware store when they’re having a big sale. You’ll thank me when you get a $499 Carrera marble vanity for $250.

I’m so happy with how this powder bathroom makeover went! I love it even more because my husband and I both did it ourselves. There’s something about DIY that makes you appreciate the final product even more.

For every room, we remodel I create a design board to help imagine the space before it comes to life. I can say hands down it was the best idea ever when deciding on what exactly to put in the space.
