Who loves a “punny” door mat? These DIY Halloween Door Mats were so fun, easy, and inexpensive to make, y’all are going to love this super easy DIY tutorial and how to style them! I’ve partnered with JOANN on this DIY Halloween Door Mat and styling our Modern Halloween Front Porch.
How to DIY a Halloween Door Mat
This project was easy in the sense of supplies needed and it only took me about 30 minutes! Raise your hand if you love 30 minute crafts…and have toddlers?! Depending on the phrase that you choose you’ll want to look at the letter sizing JOANN has. I used 6 inch stencils for mine, but standard mat lettering is 2.5 inch stencils.
Project Materials Needed:
- Plain Coir Door Mat
- Black Patio Outdoor Paint
- Sharpie
- Sponge Stippler
- Paint Brush
- Paint Dish
- 6 inch Alphabet Stencils
Step 1 : Choose your “Punny Phrase”
This was the best part about this project! You can choose whatever your heart desires, whether it’s a pun or a sweet phrase. Yes, my phrase is not spelled in-correctly. The reasoning behind that is to get your spacing correct for painting. I found this plain coir door mat for $12.99 at JOANN and used a 50% off coupon for a steal!
Step 2 : Mark your Letters
I punched out all the letters I planned to use and found a similar size for duplicate letters. The alphabet stencils I purchased did not have multiple letters.
I used a sharpie to mark the top left of all the letters so I knew where to put the stencils for painting.
Step 3 : Paint your Phrase
Press your sponge firmly on the letters to transfer as much paint onto the coir mat as you can. You may have to go over the stencil a few times to get the desired look. You do not need to wait for the letter to dry before you paint the next letter.
There were a few spots I touched up with a paint brush to make the letters a bit more full.
Step 4 : Touch up Letters
After I finished with stenciling the whole phrase I went back over with a paint brush to connect all the letters that had spaces.
Now your “punny” DIY Halloween Door Mat is ready for its debut!
Styling your Modern Halloween Front Porch
We actually gave our porch a mini update with some paint, because it was about time this guy got some much-needed love! We decided to go with white instead of the beige to make it pop.
I have become very fond of Halloween since having Liv so decorating the front porch for Halloween is definitely a first for us! I have to say it’s been a fun first especially with this fun Modern Halloween Front Porch I put together.
Materials Needed :
- DIY Halloween Door Mat
- Outdoor Rug for layering (Outdoor Stripe Fabric)
- Carvable Pumpkins
- Black Jack O Lanterns
- Paper Project Bats
- Glue Dots
- Spooky Twig Wreath
- Super Stretch Spider Webs
- Terra Cotta Flower Pots
- Mums
My favorite faux pumpkins are definitely these ones from JOANN. They’re all a little different in color and the stems are all different making them very realistic! Plus, they’re carvable. Say, what?! Yes! We will be carving these babies up on Halloween sans all the mess to display for our trick-or-treater’s.
I added some stretch spider webs in front of the door and on the side, making the entryway easily accessible still.
I potted my mums in these metal jack o lanterns that were meant for candles! How cute are these?! I kept the mums in their little containers, so I could pop in some LED lights for night time.
I hung a spooky twig wreath on the door and stuck a few bats in the wreath and used glue dots to add them to the door and bricks as if they were flying away from the wreath.
Styling your front porch should be fun, so mess around with everything and move it till ya love it!

What preset do you use?! I love the editing of the photos
Love this so much!! How much of the outdoor fabric did you buy? I am so bad at eyeing measurements but love the length of yours with the doormat!
