It’s no surprise that we moved to Key West, Florida – however, moving during the start of official hurricane season in early June and not having a disaster response plan was a huge deal. As a Home Depot Foundation ambassador this year, I get to share more of the ways they help communities and residents (just like me!) prepare for a potential hurricane ahead of time.

Key West is basically an island. We’re the southernmost point of the United States and a prime location for Hurricanes. In fact, our home survived a massive flood by Hurricane Wilma! Key West has been hit directly by three hurricanes since 1984: Georges in 1998, Wilma in 2005 and Irma in 2017. Florida is the hurricane capital of the United States. No matter where you live in the Sunshine State, you are vulnerable to the effects of a hurricane. When Irma hit, about 25% of Key West homes were destroyed.

Hurricane Prep with The Home Depot Foundation

I love knowing The Home Depot Foundation is committed to supporting impacted communities with immediate disaster relief and long-term rebuilding.

Members of Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, will package thousands of relief kits in preparation of future storms. In partnership with national nonprofit partners like Operation Blessing and Convoy of Hope, the kits are transported to affected areas in need of cleanup and rebuilding support immediately following a disaster.

The Home Depot Foundation has committed nearly $5 million to disaster response in areas impacted by fires, hurricanes and tornadoes in 2021.

Whether you’re planning ahead for you and your family or creating a clean-up kit, it’s never too early to be prepared for a disaster, y’all!
