Desert Living Room Oasis Makeover

I’ve been channeling all of the beachy boho goodness since we found out we would be moving to Key West, FL. My sweet friend Letty has already let me design an adorable shared bedroom for her girls a few months back. So getting to transform her living room into an oasis was just the icing on the cake! 

Living Room Oasis Makeover – Before

Letty had voiced that she’s been wanting to makeover her living room for quite some time, but there never seemed to be a right time. Her furniture was well loved and just didn’t quite reflect her personal style and vibe she wanted in her home.

  

  

I wanted to give her the living room she’s always wanted and deserved! I’ve told y’all time and time again, designing a space for a deserving family or friend gives me so much joy.

Living Room Oasis Makeover Reveal

Welcome to the living room oasis taking you to the serene deserts of AZ, you’d never know this was outside of Nashville, TN.

Letty had an enormous living room, but it looked a lot smaller than it actually was due to smaller furniture and smaller area rug. I wanted to create a great place to entertain friends and laying out the furniture in a conversational way was key.

First things first, we removed all the furniture and everything off the wall for a clean slate. We used my favorite white, Polar Bear by Behr Paint and holy cow! Who ever said white was boring never saw this room, am I right?!

We started with the correct size rug and guess what? A larger lighter rug actually made the room look even larger! The Solo Rugs Bernie Bohemian Moroccan Parchment 9 ft. x 12 ft. Hand-Knotted Area Rug was the first piece we started with when designing the room. The boho and vintage feel of the rug was the perfect starting point! When choosing an area rug, finding the right size is always hard. The easiest way to know if you’ve got the right size, all the front legs of the furniture should be able to fit on the rug. Bigger is typically always better when it comes to rug size!

I paired the rug with the Home Decorators Collection Maldives 38 in. Walnut Medium Rectangle Wood Coffee Table with Lift Top. This coffee table doubles as toy storage y’all! If you’re a parent you know you can never have too much storage for all those loose toys the kiddos love to play with. With the soft close lid and no locking ability it’s perfect for those little fingers.

Tips for Designing a Large Living Room

Letty’s living room was big enough for two sofas and two armchairs. She had full trust in my design but thought her living room wasn’t going to be big enough for all the furniture. Sometimes, waiting until the entire room comes together then it makes you say – I see now! The linen color of the Ovando 80 in. Beige and Dark Walnut Polyester 3 Seats Sofa with Accent Pillows with tapered wooden legs is what sold me! The sofa color pairs so well with the rest of the textures and colors in the living room! Some of the sofas and sectionals on homedepot.com/decor have the option to purchase fabric swatches too, so it takes the headache out of eyeing the perfect color.

I always say there should be more than one source of light in a room, so I always add a table lamp or floor lamp to any room. We decided on the 61 in. Black Arched Floor Lamp with Fabric Shade and the base is extremely heavy making it a bit tough to knock over when a kiddo runs into it. For a large living room I like to have a floor lamp and a table lamp including an overhead light (ceiling fan or chandelier).

Don’t think I forgot about these Jayden Creation Delphine Linen Cane Accent Chairs! These two, they’re even better in person if that’s possible. They’re affordable and come in a set of two. Letty and I both squealed when I took them out of the box y’all. By adding additional seating it creates a full circle conversational living room.

Letty had a tiered slim shelf in her living room and I wanted to replace it with another one that fit the design better, so we opted for the Home Decorators Collection 62.25 in. Gold Leaf Metal 4-shelf Accent Bookcase with Open Back. Having additional shelving whether it’s built-in or freestanding is always great for a larger living room. The glass shelves make it perfect for plants including some of the fun planters we scooped up from the homedepot.com/decor including this Two’s Company 5 in. High Lavoisier Antiqued Gold Metal/Glass Hinged Flower Vases for a propagation tube set!

The smaller accent cabinet caught my eye after using a similar piece in my old dining room makeover, the Home Decorators Collection Natural Finish Wood Accent Cabinet with Inlay Design. It has the same color and beautiful inlay work on the front of the cabinet doors. The shelves are also removable making it perfect to store internet cables and boxes with access through the back to plug into the wall.

Personal Touches for any Living Room Design

A great way to make a space feel more at home is adding a collection of curated pillows, no pillows were karate chopped in the process, lol! I added two 3R Studios Square Cotton Woven Pillow with Tassels in Mustard, along with LR Home Vintage Ivory Woven Fringed Solid Soft Poly-fill 20 in. x 20 in. Throw Pillow (white fringe) and the LR Home Coated Caramel Brown Solid Fringed Soft Poly-fill 20 in. x 20 in. Throw Pillow (reads more maroon).

Letty is pretty good with her camera so I had her frame some of her favorite photos for the living room in these beautiful Gallery 16×20 matted to 8×10 Rustic Brown Picture frames I can’t get enough of. They’re super affordable and come in a set of 2! You can even print photos in black and white for a more cohesive look.

We added a Noble House Bolivar 4 ft. Green Artificial Laurel Tree to balance out the fireplace greenery and the right side of the room. This is one of my favorite faux tree’s I’ve found on homedepot.com/decor it’s so realistic in person and photographs like a real plant as well! 

This living room oasis makeover is truly an oasis! Letty gave me free rein when it came to designing this space, she had full confidence that I could make her dream design come to life. I think I nailed it because her and her husband could not believe how amazing it turned out!
