Our backyard is a hot mess express and it’s a bit sad looking if you ask me. It was definitely overdue for a mini patio makeover! This is where we started before I decided to build our modern outdoor furniture. Just remember that you don’t have to have a glamorous backyard to enjoy it friends!

Painting the Window Trim and Siding

I painted the window trim and siding with Behr Exterior Premium Plus Ultra Pure White in Satin. Any sheen higher than that would look somewhat funny to me! Two coats worked great and used a razor blade to remove all the paint on the windows. Most exterior paint I believe is more matte, that’s what was on ours before I painted. However, it seemed like dirt was drawn to it like a magnet.

Repurposing What You Already Have

We bought this fire pit years ago with wishes of s’mores and bonfires that literally never happened. This guy has definitely seen better days! Spray paint works many wonders, just ask my mother-in-law. We both agree spray paint can fix just about anything!

I used Rustoleum High Heat spray paint to fix this guy that looks brand new now! I only used about half of it and only spray painted the outside and the lid.

We also have some great bistro chairs that will be part of our phase 2 backyard remodel! You can catch a sneak peak of those in the before photo of the backyard.

Biggest Bang for your Buck

I wanted nice outdoor modern furniture and everything that I wanted was just simply out of the budget. We wanted this to be budget friendly and do this backyard remodel in phases. This first phase was to make it possible for us to enjoy the space we currently have with cosmetic changes. Paint goes a long way friends!

I built two modern outdoor chairs and a sofa for less than the cost of the sofa I originally wanted for the space!

Using Plants as Decor

I scooped up some great plants with my design assistant to help keep mosquitoes and bugs. Here’s all your must haves for the patio this summer to keep all those pesky bugs away the natural way:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
1. Citronella
2. Lemon Balm
3. Catnip
4. Marigolds
5. Basil
6. Lavender
7. Peppermint
8. Pennyroyal
9. Rosemary
10. Geraniums

We were only able to snag some basil, lavender, peppermint and a few others from the Home Depot nursery.

There were so many delays in getting this whole project fixed with how much rain we got over here in TN! I’m happy to say we finished it and so excited to share the final reveal of our mini patio makeover for phase 1!

  1. I didn’t know you could paint siding?! Which paint would you recommend for East Coast winters and summers?

    1. Hi Jane,

Yes, you can definitely paint siding! However, our siding is not vinyl – it’s actually cedar wood siding! I would definitely use Behr Multi-Purpose Primer and an exterior grade paint that’s made for vinyl. I know Behr has a great product for this!

    1. Hi Christina,

Our patio was roughly 8 x 20 feet! We just redid the patio and extended it to 10 x 26.5 feet.
