This modern boho bathroom remodel was definitely one for the books. We decided to demo and start the bathroom remodel 2 weeks before my husband deployed. Great idea, am I right? We sure do know how to keep it adventurous around here! This bathroom was going to be used for guests and eventually for Liv (and future children), so we wanted to create a modern boho design.

My husband was so “gun-ho” about getting things rolling that we bought tile, fixtures, and the vanity all a week before we started. My in-laws flew out to help and to see my husband off and we were so grateful for their help! Did I forget to mention I was also 6 months pregnant? I told you we were adventurous!

Can we just talk about how awful this bathroom was? I mean, carpet in the bathroom? Why was that even a thing! These countertops were even a trip, they were below my waist and I’m 5’1″ so that’s saying something.

Check out that yummy carpet, y’all!

The previous homeowners said they didn’t do any upgrades to the home when they lived here, so this is our 24 year old bathroom in all its glory!

I think y’all understand how stuck in the 90’s our bathroom was and how badly it needed to be remodeled. We started out by demoing the bathroom ourselves and threw out everything! The fiberglass tub/shower combo and the vanity had to be cut in half for it to fit through the house.

My father-in-law did the plumbing for the new tub and shower fixture. Can I just say free help is the best help? It was a good thing he was a plumber in a previous life. We went with a different style lever so the plumbing had to be reworked. It also was not to code since it was put in about 24 years ago.

Tile was a no brainer for this space! We had to install sub floor to make the floor level,  since there was carpet in the sink area and linoleum in the washroom. We leveled the tub and secured it into place to finish the plumbing rough-in. While all the plumbing was being reworked I painted the walls and trim in the sink area.

After the tub was secured we put the cement board down, or I should say the tile guy and I. At this point in the project the demo and plumbing took a lot longer than anticipated. The demo took a few days and we had to purchase all new plumbing rough-in supplies since the plumbing was so old. I also returned our tub for a different one, so that slowed us down too.

We planned to tile ourselves, but we were worried we’d run out of time and we did. The tile guy did the floor and shower tile for $850, which is an unbelievably good price. However, he did tile work as a hobby so it’s not perfect. But, hey! We weren’t paying for perfect either.

Tile work took a few days for him to complete with only working on it for about 4-5 hours a day. We went with a matte grey hexagon floor tile from The Tile Shop and it was such a dream!

After the tile guy finished, I still had to caulk everything, clean the grout off the tile more, add toe kicks, install base boards and paint the washroom. Meaning, I still had a lot to do at 7 months pregnant. Let’s just say I was needing a real good back massage after all of this.

Cody was supposed to be able to install all the plumbing fixtures when he came home for the birth of our daughter, but we were going to have a lot of visitors in the coming weeks after Liv was born so I hired a plumber to come install the vanity, sink faucets, toilet and shower fixtures for $350.

I spray painted the cabinet hardware to match the rest of the fixtures and it looks so much better if I do say so myself.

I had my girlfriend come over to help me hang the mirror and Cody installed the light fixtures when he came home from deployment for Liv’s birth.

I still can’t believe the transformation photo! Look at that before and after y’all!

This was my very first remodel all the way down to the studs, well sort of. The washroom got down to the studs! The best advice I can give anyone attempting their first remodel, stop dreaming and just do it. If you get lost or not sure what you’re doing a long the way just Google or YouTube it. That’s the only reason why I know anything about DIY friends.

    1. Liz, I’m on YouTube now so I guess that’s close enough right? Lol Also thank you!

    1. Hi Andrsa!

The faucet is from Lowes and it’s called AquaSource Single Handle Tub and Shower Faucet, Oil Rubbed Bronze. Item # 247458 Model # 873-X3727H2

      Best,

      Kourtni

    1. Hi Haley,

The floors were done with 1/8″ 3mm and the subway tile was done with 3/16″ 5mm.

    1. Hi Tyra!

I just added a link to the Delta tub we purchased at Home Depot at the bottom of the post under “Get the Look” 🙂

    1. Hi Amy!

The subway tile grout color is Pro Grout Charcoal Sanded and floor grout color is Pro Grout Excel Standard White all from The Tile Shop.

    1. Hi Kathleen!

We put up a window film that gives the window a frosted look from Home Depot. I just added the link for the window film to the bottom of the post under ” Get the Look”.

  1. Just wondering what tub you went with. I am trying to figure out which one I would like and I think yours might be the same one we chose, but wanted to confirm.

    Thanks,

  2. Hi!
Love your entire bathroom….trying to copy it. Even your cotton ball canister is adorable. Where did you get it?

    1. Hi CJ!

You are so sweet!! It was actually a DIY. I turned an old candle into a little canister for the bathroom.

  3. This is all so great and has provided a LOT of inspiration for our flip. Thank you! Quick question- can you provide a link or information about how to order the backsplash for the vanity? We ordered the vanity and it did not come with it. Thank you!

    1. Hi Linley!

I’m so sorry to hear that! I guess they changed the packaging for the vanity to no longer include the backsplash. Here’s a link to Home Depot’s backsplashes: https://rstyle.me/+zAsLbDN1nHFp287nM9OXYg. You’ll just have to measure the size of your vanity and see which one fits and goes with the color of the countertop (carrara marble). Hope this helps!

  4. Hey there!

We are mid-remodel…We purchased the same vanity and I’m just realizing it doesn’t come with the backsplash piece. Whoops! Any insight on how to find it? The salespeople at Home Depot were unable to locate it.

Your stuff is amazing! Thanks for all the inspiration 😃

    1. Hi Linley!

I’m so sorry to hear that! I think they may have changed their packaging to no longer include the backsplash, because I have received this question from a few others too. I believe extra backsplash is only available online and the same for the sidesplash. Here’s a link to backsplash/sidesplash on Home Depots site: https://rstyle.me/+pztZ3ubI_ZXjStTjUazfAw.

      Hope this helps!

  5. Hi!
Just love your bathroom and using it as inspiration for our remodel. Love all the bathroom accessories as well. Where did you get your cute cotton ball canister?
    Thanks!

    1. Hi CJ!

You are so sweet thank you! I wish I could give you a link for it, but it was a DIY! I purchased a candle from a small shop that I turned into a canister! So sorry!

  6. Absolutly Love This Bathroom! We have been looking for a tile like this for SOOOO long! Is it the Metropolis 12″ matte from the Tile Shop? In dark or light grey?

      1. Ok gotcha. The tile link at the end of the post actually took me to a Silver 10″ tile from the Tile Shop. So of course I ran out and grabbed a few samples of that one. Now I don’t know which one I like better! Lol

        1. Hi Jordan,

My apologies! We used the similar hexagon tile in both bathroom updates and I mistook your question for our master bath tile. The 10″ silver hexagon from The Tile Shop is correct. Sorry for the confusion!

  7. Hello! We have to searching for how to remodel our bathroom that is verrryyy similar to your before photos! Did you have trouble fitting the bathtub through the door to the toilet/ tub?
    Thanks for the fabulous inspiration!

    1. Hi Monika,

Are you referring to removing the old tub or putting the new one in? The old tub was removed through the window we replaced and same with the shower. So we didn’t try fitting either of those through the door. Our new free standing tub came in two pieces, it’s a fiberglass tub not cast-iron. So it fit through the door very easily!

  8. This bathroom reno is absolutely stunning! Where did you get the little jar for your q-tips? I couldn’t find it listed. Thanks a bunch!

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Thank you so much! I’m so glad you like it! The q-tip jar is actually a DIY, it’s an old candle I repurposed from a small shop.

    1. Hi Jessica,

The hexagon tiles are very easy to clean! We scooped up the tile cleaner from The Tile Shop when we purchased our tiles for a less abrasive cleaner that keeps the tiles from getting damaged by other cleaning products.

    1. Hi Sarah,

They were purchase from Amazon, however, they are no longer being sold. Here’s the description from the listing when I purchased in 2017, 2 of Jeteven Brass Wall Sconce Vintage Industrial Metal Wall Light Lamp Shade With Adjustable Swing Arm Lighting Fixtures, Sold by: Lorvsap. Hope that helps! I linked some similar options since those are no long available.

  9. I love the two-toned terra cotta pot (darker on the bottom) – was that a DIY of yours? Would love to know how to do it myself or where to buy!

    1. Hi Claire,

It’s actually just the water from the plant penetrating the terra cotta pot. No DIY or specific pot, just water 🙂

  10. Hi! I love this bathroom remodel! Can you confirm the tile used? It links to a silver color but it reads so much darker in your pics? Is it just lighting? I’m looking for something In a more charcoal matte gray hex. Thanks!

    1. Hi Courtney,

Yes, the tile linked is the correct tile. My photos are edited so sometimes the true colors can slightly be altered to a more warmer color.

    1. Hi Helen,

Thank you so much! It’s from a local store called, Miss Lucille’s! They don’t have an online shop, but I did link a similar shelf at the bottom of the post 🙂
