Our dear friends became new parents last year and it was evident by the explosion of toys taking over their living room. With new babies means more toys and the need for more storage. So, we’re upgrading these new parents living room into a more functional space for their new family with decor from The Home Depot and loads of storage solutions! A Modern Living room upgrade for these new parents is underway friends!
New Parents Living Room – Before
Can we all just take a moment to say, “YES, this!” Because every new parents living room has looked like this at some point in their adventure into parenthood. I’m here to tell y’all that it does not have to be like this forever. Our kiddos things shouldn’t have to take over our spaces and we should be able to marry the two into functional and beautiful!
My overall design for this living room was to optimize the space without it feeling to over crowded. Let’s make this space beautiful and functional for this sweet family!
Modern Living Room Upgrade Reveal
Welcome to our sweet friends upgraded living room full of abundant storage and the perfect touches of home for a more adult living room space.
First things first we sorted through all of the toys and kiddo contraptions to figure out what was a “must keep” in this space. Then we made sure everything had a home! With a long narrow living room it was hard to find the right way to set up the furniture so that it was functional yet still enjoyable. We lined the changing table wall with two Home Decorators Collection Oxford Black 4 Door Storage Console Tables to create a long built-in like cabinet storage for toys, diapers, and any baby essentials.
The top of the console tables are even wide enough for a changing pad that we stored inside the cabinet for a neat changing area.
I love that these have magnetic closures so they catch instantly when closed for a securely closed door. Don’t worry, we secured the console tables to the wall and added some baby safe cabinet locks.
The biggest adult thing anyone can do is own a piece of art and I really wanted to elevate the living room with pieces that would make an impact, and this 30 in. x 30 in. “Morning Beach” by Alison Jerry Framed Wall Art is just stunning! Its a printed image on a canvas with a black wood frame. After seeing it in person I was trying to find a place in my own home for the same piece!
Having a simple design with minimal furniture creates the best play space for their kiddo and new parents to not feel cultured once the toys come out to play! There are a few design elements I like to bring to every space and one of them is a vase. Fresh flowers or stems is the perfect addition to make your home feel extremely inviting and smelling all sorts of goodness.
We opted for a slipcover sectional knowing that the family likes to be able to wash things fairly easily with kids and pets. The Home Decorators Collection Sectional was the perfect fit and classic touch with the rolled arm rests.
It even sits up off the floor enough to create any extra storage under the sofa for items that were too big for the console storage table.
These new parents have NEVER had a coffee table and I knew I wanted to make this one special for them. I opted for the International Concepts Solano Unfinished Coffee Table and decided to add a little Buy to DIY to their space. This is a series we do here where we buy and item to DIY, by modifying the piece from the original design.
We added my favorite stain, Flagstone by Varathane available at The Home Depot. I had originally planned to cut the legs shorter, but the sectional sat a little higher than anticipated. Design tip – your coffee table should be about the same height as your seating.
When shopping online at homedepot.com/decor be sure to filter your seating and coffee tables by the same height. It’s such a tragedy when you fall in love with a piece of furniture that just isn’t the right size!
Personal Design Touches for a Living Room
A great way to make a space feel more at home is by getting some photos up on the wall. I know, I know – not everyone is into displaying photos in their home. To make it more cohesive with the design I always opt for printing black and white photos. We added 6 black and white photos into these StyleWell Black Frame with White Matte Gallery Wall Picture Frames that come as a set of 4. Gallery walls can get pretty expensive and these are such a steal at their price point and size!
Y’all know I am not opposed to layering rugs on carpets, so I had to add this beautiful nuLOOM Ehtel Medallion Fringe Silver 7 ft. x 9 ft. Area Rug to finish off the space. By adding a rug to a space it can help in so many ways. It can help anchor the room if its open concept or your living area flows directly into another room. It can also make the area feel more bright and airy! The whole design revolved around making this area as bright and clean as possible.
I mean just look at that face, Wyatt is definitely loving her new living room and of course pro-coffee table all the way.
I’m so happy with how this living room turned out! I can’t wait for our sweet friends to enjoy this space and grow into it as a family. This Modern Living Room Upgrade was just what these new parents needed to make this space feel like theirs again. You can have a beautiful home and you can have kids at the same time y’all!
