We had a play date at my sweet friend Letty’s house and we were chatting about how she wanted to move her daughters into the same bedroom one of these days. I got this grand idea to give her a shared girls bedroom makeover!

We took a modern twist on a desert boho style and turned it into the perfect shared girls bedroom for Mia and Isla! It’s hard to believe this room makeover was a weekend project with mostly cosmetic updates! If this doesn’t convince you of the power of paint, I don’t know what will. Mia and Isla’s room is 10×11, with 1 window and a French door closet.

and here it is now!

I gave Letty and Chris “homework” just like my favorite show on HGTV, Property Brothers. They were all for it and such great sports! They’re now wondering why they’ve waited so long to do so many DIY projects in their house. They’ve officially been bit by the DIY bug!

I had them use liquid sandpaper to paint the old dresser they were planning to give away. She thrifted it from an antique store and painted it with white chalk paint (see the before below).

They used the same tutorial I did for the nightstand makeover for our master bedroom.

I really wanted to repurpose the crib railing into a fun way to display books. I’m sure you’ve seen all the white book ledges or IKEA spice racks used as book shelves. I wanted something a bit more unique for the space.

I turned the dowel crib railing sideways and opened the books to hang over the dowels.

We wanted to create a desert, boho, cowgirl feel and I stumbled upon this hispanic cowgirl print and it became the inspiration for the entire room design. I really wanted the girls to have pieces in their room that were handpicked for them. When Chris and his eldest daughter Mia went to pick up the prints she asked if it was her!

We hung the curtains high and wide, my best tip for hanging ANY curtains. They have 8′ ceilings and we hung the curtains 8″ from the window trim and 3″ from the ceiling. I used one curtain panel since I couldn’t find a matching one and cut it up the middle. It ended up working out, what a happy accident!

The girls have a separate playroom now, so most of their large toys are in their now. We kept some of their favorites like the dinosaur playhouse and some of their favorite books and stuffy’s.

The girls also love their hats, so I of course had to display them on the wall for them. Oh boy, if I had two girls close in age they’d be sharing a room just like Mia and Isla!

We even tried a second rug option in the girls room from Boutique Rugs and it was such a tough choice! We ultimately went with the darker option since it was a little more kid friendly for accidental spills and stains. Boutique Rugs gave me coupon code for y’all to receive 60% off your order! Use code: KOURTNILEIGH60.

Which rug was your favorite in the shared girls bedroom makeover?

I had so much fun making this room a reality for my sweet friend and her daughters! They are 4 and 2, so it’s the perfect age for them to start having nightly sleepovers. I was so excited to see the joy on the girls faces when they saw their new shared room together. Isla, couldn’t help but pul all the books out and start looking at them. I may or may not already be planning my next project in her home.
